ELA Focus Skills: Gross Motor Skills, Phonological Awareness (Rhythm, Rhyme, and Repetition)

Have children stand in a circle. Tell them you are going to recite a rhyme. Explain that you are going to signal one child by “hammering” in front of them. Say, If I point my “hammer” at you, I want you to jump in the circle and say your name out loud as you “hammer” back at me.

Demonstrate for children how to “hammer” by placing the palm of one hand up and hammering it with the fist of the other hand.

Model the procedure. Recite the first line. Point your upright palm at a child and begin hammering. Have the child jump into the center of the circle.

  • Recite the second line and have the child say his or her name as he or she hammers back in your direction.
  • Ask the rest of the group to repeat the child’s name.
  • Recite the last two lines.
  • Repeat the process until everyone has jumped into the circle.
  • Encourage children to recite the lines with you.

Jump In!
Jump in.
Say your name. (child says name, class repeats name)
We’re so happy
That you came.
