Before showing Between the Lions “Words Beginning With ‘b’,” ask children to say the word building. Say, The word building begins with the /b/ sound. Repeat the word, emphasizing the beginning /b/ sound.
- Tell children they are going to watch a video and listen to some other words that begin with the /b/ sound.
- Play the video and ask children to listen for /b/ words.
- Play the video again and have children repeat each word as it appears on screen.
- Ask children to name any other words they know that begin with the /b/ sound.
Adaptation: If children have difficulty coming up with another word that begins with the /b/ sound, allow them to look at ABC books in your Library Center for ideas.
English Language Learner: If English language learners have difficulty thinking of words that begin with /b/, partner them with strong English speakers who can tell them if an object they act out or draw does or does not start with the /b/ sound.
Educator Tip: Guided and independent letter, sound, and word practice continues to take place in center activities. If desired, you can set up the literacy center immediately after the direct instruction and repeat instruction before children work in the literacy center identifying letters.
