Greeting Song: “Who Are You?” #7
ELA Focus Skills: Name Recognition, Phonological Awareness (Rhythm, Rhyme, and Repetition)
Tell children that you are going to sing “Who Are You” again today. Tell children that you are going to hold up a name card and say the name, and you want them to listen to the ending sound in the name. Say, If I say your name and you recognize the ending letter sound then shout it out. If you don’t recognize the ending letter sound, then shout out your name and make the sound of a favorite tool.
- Model the procedure. Begin to sing “Who Are You?”
- After the second line, hold up a name card at random and exaggerate the ending letter sound, for example, Matias-s-s-s-s.
- Wait for that child to acknowledge and say his or her ending letter sound or name.
- Sing the next line and invite children to sing along.
- After the last line, have everyone repeat the child’s name.
- Continue until all children have had a turn.
Who Are You?
(sung to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”)
Who, who, who are you?
Say it loud and clear. (child says name)
Listen, listen, listen, listen,
Whose name do you hear? (children repeat name)
Adaptation: Continue to support those who cannot yet recognize their names in print. Set aside time to play a matching game with each child. Have duplicate name cards. Show the child his or her card and another child’s card and ask, Which card shows your name? Have the child trace the letters on the card. Work up to spreading more and more cards and asking the child to pick out his or her until seeing the name is automatic.
