Watch Together: “Reginald Monkey: x, x-ray, xylophone” (BTL clip)

Show the Between the Lions video clip “Reginald Monkey: x, x-ray, xylophone” to children. Introduce the video by saying, There are not many words that begin with the letter “Xx,” but many words have the letter “Xx” in them. Tell children that in the video, a monkey reads a very short poem about two words that begin with “Xx”: x-ray and xylophone.
After children watch the video, review the different /x/ letter sounds with them.
- Write the two words on chart paper and underline the letter “x” in each.
- Point to the “x” in x-ray and say, In this word, the “x” has the same sound as its name: /x/. Say the word with me: x-ray.
- Point to the “x” in xylophone and say, In this word, the “x” has a /z/ sound. Say it with me, xylophone. Emphasize the /z/ sound.
