ELA Focus Skills: Name Recognition, Phonological Awareness (Segmenting)

Say, Today as we sing “Sing, Sing, Sing with Me,” I will say a name and clap the word parts in the name. If I say your name, say your name and clap the word parts. Then we will all say and clap your name.

Model the procedure if necessary. Sing the song, call a name at random, and clap the syllables, for example, Nan-cy. Have that child say and clap his or her name. Continue until each child has been recognized. Invite children to sing along with you.

Sing, Sing, Sing with Me
(sung to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”)
Sing, sing, sing with me,
Sing out loud and clear.
Happily, happily, happily, happily,
We’re glad that <child’s name> is here.

Social Emotional Tip: As children say their names aloud, they build their self-concept.
