Watch Together: “Fred Says: fix, six” (BLT clip)

English Language Arts/Speaking and Listening/SL.PK.MA.2 Recall information for short periods of time and retell, act out, or represent information from a text read aloud, a recording, or a video (e.g., watch a video about birds and their habitats and make drawings or constructions of birds and their nests).
English Language Arts/Foundational Skills/RF.PK.MA.2 With guidance and support, demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).

Language Development/Receptive Language Attends to language during conversations, songs, stories, or other learning experiences.
Literacy Knowledge/Phonological Awareness Identifies and discriminates between sounds and phonemes in language, such as attention to beginning and ending sounds of words and recognition that different words begin or end with the same sound.

Watch Together: “Fred Says: fix, six” (BLT clip)

ELA Focus Skills: Phonological Awareness (Ending Sounds)

Tell children that they are going to watch a short video. Say, Fred is going to say some words. Listen for the sounds Fred says. Show the Between the Lions video clip; then ask,

  • What was Fred trying to do? (fix the six) Say, That’s right, he was trying to fix the six. What ending sound do you hear in the words fix and six? Emphasize the ending sound as you say the words with children.
  • Show the video again. Ask children to blend the sounds and say the words with Fred.
