ELA Focus Skills: Name Recognition, Phonological Awareness (Rhythm, Rhyme, and Repetition)

Have children sit in a circle. Say, I will sing “Who Are You?” and hold up a name card. If I hold up your name, say your name, and then we will all say your name. Model the procedure, if necessary.

  • Begin “Who Are You?”
  • Hold up a name card at random.
  • Have that child say his or her name.
  • Sing the rest of the song and invite children to sing along and repeat the child’s name.
  • Continue around the circle, repeating the process until each child has been recognized.

Who Are You?
(sung to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”)
Who, who, who are you?
Say it loud and clear. (child says name)
Listen, listen, listen, listen,
Whose name do you hear? (children repeat name)

Adaptation: Continue to support those who do not yet recognize their names in print. Attach to the name card a sticker of an object that begins with the same sound as the name, and prompt by pointing to the letter and saying the beginning sound.
