ELA Focus Skills: Gross Motor Skills, Letter Formation, Letter Recognition

With masking tape or chalk, make a large uppercase letter “X” and a large lowercase letter “x” side by side on the ground.

  • Have children line up in two lines: one at the top of the right-hand slanted line in “X” and the other at the top of the left-hand slanted line.
  • Signal each group to start, one by one, marching along its slanted line from top to bottom. (Make sure to stagger the start to prevent collisions where the lines in the “X” cross.)
  • Have each line of children skip over to the lowercase “x” and repeat the procedure.
  • Encourage children to clap or chant the letter name as they march.
