ELA Focus Skills: Phonological Awareness (Segmenting)

Say, Today when I sing “Who Are You?” I will say a name and clap the word parts. If I say your name, repeat your name and clap the word parts; then we will all do the same.

  • Sing the first two lines of “Who Are You?” Invite children to sing along.
  • Call a child’s name and clap the syllables, for example, Is-a-bel-la.
  • Have that child say his or her name and clap the word parts.
  • Sing the next line and invite children to sing along and say and clap the child’s name.
  • Continue to repeat the process until each child has been recognized.

Who Are You?
(sung to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”)
Who, who, who are you?
Say it loud and clear. (child says name, claps word parts)
Listen, listen, listen, listen,
Whose name do you hear? (children repeat name, clap word parts)
