Look at and praise children’s artwork, writing, and charts displayed around the room. Display the read-aloud books Alphabet Under Construction by Denise Fleming and Tell the Truth, B. B. Wolf by Judy Sierra. Then talk about what children did and learned this week, including their work in the Learning Centers. Help children make connections between themselves, the books, the shows, and their explorations this week. Ask,

  • What are some of the things you built this week? How did you build <the houses>? What tools did you use?
  • How did the mouse construct the alphabet? What tools did he use?
  • What kinds of houses did you learn about this week? How are they like the houses you built?
  • Tell us something you learned about building bridges this week.

Display the x-ray word card. Say, Do you recognize this word? Yes, it’s the word x-ray. What sound do you hear at the beginning of x-ray? Yes, /x/. What sound does “x” make at the end of the word six? Yes, /ks/. Who can tell me another word that ends with the /ks/ sound?

English Language Learners: If English language learners have trouble putting their ideas into words, let them pantomime; then you can explain what words to use.
