Skill Focus: Concepts of Print, Letter Recognition, Vocabulary

Encourage a child to select an ABC book for you to read. Ask the child to point to the title on the front cover and read it aloud with you.

Then invite the child to turn the pages until he or she comes to a favorite part of the book. Acknowledge him or her for turning the pages gently and handling the book with care. Encourage the child to name the objects shown on the favorite page.

While on the child's favorite page, ask him or her to name several individual letters with you. Ask, Do you know what letter this is? Do you know what sound does this letter makes? How is this ABC book like others you have read? How is it different?
