Skill Focus: Imaginative Play, Vocabulary

Have children work together to build sand castles. Help children glue cutout rectangles onto wooden craft sticks to make flags. Talk to children about who lives in their castles. Suggest that children build their castles to size for a group of figures. Encourage children to use positional vocabulary as they play. Ask, What’s on top of the castle? Who is that in front of the castle?

Adaptation: You can adapt the Sensory Table activities by using a cake pan or baking dish for the sand (or salt). Pour a small amount into the pan. Use more than one pan if multiple children are doing the activity. Activities can also be done outside in a sand box.
