ELA Focus Skills: Gross Motor Skills, Letter Recognition
Make a number of “S” letters on the floor or playground with chalk or tape. Leave space between each “S” so children can distinguish the form of the letter. Mark the starting point at the top right of each letter. Have children skip around each letter “S,” beginning at each starting point and following the line. Encourage them to shout out the letter name after each one.
Adaptation: For those children who are ready, have paper and pencils handy. Invite children to write the uppercase and lowercase “Ss."
Educator Tip: Guided and independent letter, sound, and word practice continues to take place in center activities. It is helpful to set up the literacy center immediately after the direct instruction and repeat instruction before children work in the literacy center identifying letters.
