Watch Together: “Words Beginning with ‘s’” #2 (BTL clip)
ELA Focus Skills: Active Viewing, Active Listening, Letter Recognition, Phonological Awareness, Speaking and Listening
Remind children that they have been learning about the letter “Ss.” Tell them they are going to watch a short video clip about words that begin with /s/. Play Between the Lions “Words Beginning with ‘s’” once without stopping.
Replay the video and have children repeat the words as they appear on the screen. Have them clap each time they hear the /s/ sound. Encourage children to name more words that start with /s/.
Adaptation: If children have difficulty coming up with the names of other words that start with /s/, point to or focus their attention on objects in the room that begin with /s/.
Educator Tip: Guided and independent letter, sound, and word practice continues to take place in center activities. It is helpful to set up the literacy center immediately after the direct instruction and repeat instruction before children work in the literacy center identifying letters.
