Skill Focus: Fine Motor Skills, Letter Formation, Letter Recognition, Vocabulary

Educator Prep: Print out the Between the Lions alphabet chart or create an alphabet chart on chart paper.

Display the letter “Ss” card. Trace over both the lowercase and uppercase “Ss” to show children how to form the letters.

  • Distribute an “S” and “s” sheet to each child. Have them trace the letters along with you. Point out that the lowercase “s” is shaped like the uppercase “S”; it’s just smaller.
  • Then have children make a “Seedy ‘Ss’” by having them fill in the block letters with seeds.

Adaptation: An option to the seeds could be stickers, so children would instead create a “Sticky ‘Ss’.”

Adaptation: For groups with very young children you may need to place your finger directly below their finger as you trace the “Ss.” Have children “follow” your finger around the letter.
