Tell children they are going to watch the video clip Between the Lions “Word morph: gold–goose–gourd.” Hold up and explain that a gourd is a type of round fruit that is like a pumpkin. View the video once without pausing.
Replay the video and have children repeat the words along with the narrator. After viewing, invite children to repeat the following tongue twister, emphasizing the initial /g/ sounds:
Gus gets gourds from the garden.
Educator Tip: Guided and independent letter, sound, and word practice continues to take place in center activities. If desired, you can set up the literacy center immediately after the direct instruction and repeat instruction before children work in the literacy center identifying letters.
