ELA Focus Skills: Letter Recognition, Vocabulary, Word Recognition

Educator Prep: Print out the Between the Lions alphabet chart or create an alphabet chart on chart paper. You may want to “hide” extra “Gg” words around the room so all children can find a few.

Reinforce recognition of the letter “Gg” and the word garden by having children hunt for them in the room. Suggest they look on charts, name cards, word cards, and in book titles and story pages. Ask each child to find at least two examples and “read” them to you.

Adaptation: You may want to pair children at different learning stages for the hunt.

Educator Tip: Guided and independent letter, sound, and word practice continues to take place in center activities. If desired, you can set up the literacy center immediately after the direct instruction and repeat instruction before children work in the literacy center identifying letters.
