Educator Prep: Print out the Between the Lions alphabet chart or create an alphabet chart on chart paper.

Display the letter “Gg” card. Give each child a cut uppercase “G” and lowercase “g” letter. Have children trace over the uppercase letter a few times. Repeat with the lowercase letter. Point out the differences in the uppercase and the lowercase letters.

  • Then distribute sheets of white paper and crayons. Explain to children that you want them to do a rubbing of each letter so they can see how different they are.
  • Tape the white paper onto the table over the sandpaper (foam) letter so the paper will stay in place.
  • Show children how to rub over the letter with the side of the crayon.

Adaptation: For groups with very young children you may need to help them bear down on the crayon while rubbing. To do this, place your hand over the child’s as you rub the letter form.
