Point to the letter “Gg” card and say, This card shows an uppercase “G” and a lowercase “g.” Hold up the box containing uppercase letters and tell children there are some uppercase letters inside. Explain that you want children to find all the uppercase “G” letters and put them in one pile. All the other letters will go in another pile.

Have children sort the letters with you. As you take the letters out of the box, comment on the shape of each letter, for example, point out the small straight line on the uppercase “G” and the hook on the bottom of the lowercase “g.”

  • When the children have sorted the letters, encourage volunteers to identify the letters in the other pile by name.
  • Repeat the process with the lowercase letters and challenge children to place each lowercase letter next to its uppercase mate.
