Sing “This Is the Way I Plant the Grains” with children to help them recall the sequence of events in the little red hen story. Tell children that they will sing a song and act out how the little red hen plants her grains. Have children act out each verse. Before adding a new verse, ask children to give ideas as to how they might act it out. For example, ask, How can we show how the hen cuts the wheat?
This Is the Way I Plant the Grains
(sung to the tune of “Here We Go ’Round the Mulberry Bush”)
This is the way I plant the grains,
Plant the grains, plant the grains,
This is the way I plant the grains,
All by myself.
(Create new verses by inserting the following phrases in place of “plant the grains”: cut the wheat; grind the wheat; bake the bread; eat the bread.)
Adaptation: With very young children, sing the song to one child at a time.
