STEM Key Concepts: Plants need water and sunlight to grow

ELA Focus Skills: Active Viewing, Active Listening, Story Comprehension, Vocabulary

Tell children they are going to watch the show Between the Lions Help! again.

Before You Watch
Review the story. Talk about how the red hen finds a grain of wheat and plants it in the ground.

Then set a viewing focus for children by having them think about the steps the hen takes to grow the wheat. Ask, Are the steps similar or different to what you are doing with your seed/plant explorations? Let's find out.

As You Watch
Pause after each step the hen takes while planting and harvesting the grain. Review the sequence of steps. For example, after the hen plants the grain in the ground pause and ask questions such as,

  • What is the first thing the hen does with the grain?
  • Why do you think the hen needs to put the grain in the ground first?
  • What was the first step you took when you planted your seeds/bulbs?

After You Watch
Discuss the story. Ask questions such as,

  • What did the hen do after she found the wheat grains? You may need to review parts of the video to help children sequence the steps.
  • What did you do after you were given some bean seeds? What do you do now to help your seeds grow?
  • Talk about how the hen used the wheat plants to make flour and then she used the flour to make bread. Ask, What might you be able to do with your beans once they are fully grown?
