ELA Focus Skills: Phonological Awareness (Beginning Sounds)

Hold up the letter card “Kk.” Ask children what sound the letter “Kk” makes. Then copy the following sentence on chart paper, reading each word slowly as you write.

Kevin keeps kiwis in the kitchen.

Read the sentence aloud, stressing the /k/ sound. Ask, What sound do you hear at the beginning of many of the words in this sentence? Invite children to repeat the sentence with you as you point to the words.

Take It Further: Help interested children make up more alliterative sentences of their own.

Adaptation: If children become frustrated trying to say the sentence, just review the letter sound with them by having them repeat each word after you slowly.
