Learn About Letters Together: Letter Hunt
ELA Focus Skills: Letter Recognition, Phonological Awareness (Beginning Sounds)
Educator Prep: Hide the plastic letters “Bb,” “Hh,” “Kk,” “Mm,” “Pp,” “Rr,” “Ss,” and “Tt” around the room.
Have children go on a letter hunt to review what they have learned about the target letter and some other, often-used, letters. Tell children to find two letters each and then join you in the circle. Make sure you hide enough letters for each child to find two.
Once all children have joined the circle, tell children you want them to hold up one letter at a time and name the letter, the letter sound, and a word that begins with the letter. Hold up a letter to demonstrate and say, I found a letter “Hh.” “Hh” has the sound /h/. Hill begins with the letter “Hh.” Continue until all children have presented their two letters.
Adaptation: For groups with very young children, you may want to have a pile of pictures of things that begin with the letters. Hold up a picture if children are unable to think of something that begins with that letter.
