Watch Together: “Experimenting with Seeds” (PEEP live-action clip)

STEM Key Concepts: Plants get their needs met from the environment (their habitat); Some plant parts are below the ground and some above; Earthworms are animals that live in the soil, underground

ELA Focus Skills: Active Viewing, Classifying, Compare and Contrast, Listening and Speaking, Vocabulary

Have children look at the bean and pea seeds they planted in plastic bags. Tell children they are going to watch a short video about some children who are experimenting with seeds and watching roots grow. After you watch, ask questions such as,

  • What did the children do to help the roots sprout from the seeds?
  • How are the roots in the video similar to the roots in the bean/pea seeds you planted?
  • How was their experiment like the experiment you did? How was it different?

You may want to replay the video a second time for children.

Educator Tip: Watching and discussing the selected PEEP stories and live-action video clips can spark and extend children’s interest and understanding of plants. We suggest that children watch the video clips after they have had an opportunity to do their own initial exploration of plants.
