Skill Focus: Book Appreciation, Concepts of Print, Vocabulary

Encourage children to select books that interest them and to look at the words and pictures on their own or with other children. Ask children to show you the front cover and point to the title of the book. Read aloud the title.

Then point to and read aloud the names of the author and illustrator. Ask children to tell you what an author and an illustrator do. Guide children to the first and last pages of the book as you model where to begin and stop reading.

Ask children to tell you about their book. If they chose a nonfiction book about worms, ask them to turn to their favorite picture. Read the accompanying text aloud. If the book has a table of contents, index, and/or picture captions, point out and talk about these features with children.
