ELA Focus Skills: Active Viewing, Listening and Speaking

Tell children they are going to watch, PEEP and the Big Wide World "Collecting and Sorting.” Explain that in the video clip, children are collecting things they find outdoors. Set a viewing focus by asking children to notice how the children in the video sort their collections.

After viewing, ask questions such as,

  • What kinds of things did the children collect?
  • What did they notice about the plant parts the children collected?
  • How did the children sort their things? Is it similar to or different from how you sorted your collection?

Encourage children to share something they saw in the video that they want to try the next time they explore outdoors. Talk with children about other things they might like to collect next time they go outdoors.

Educator Tip: Watching and discussing the selected PEEP stories and live-action video clips can spark and extend children’s interest and understanding of plants. We suggest that children watch the video clips after they have had an opportunity to do their own initial exploration of plants. That way your children can compare their experiences and discoveries with those shown on the video clip and think about what additional plant explorations they might like to try.
