ELA Focus Skills: Name Recognition, Phonological Awareness (Segmenting; Rhythm, Rhyme, and Repetition)

Sing “Who Are You?” This time, hold up a child’s name card as you sing the first line. Have that child stand, say his or her name, and clap the word parts (syllables) in the name. After you sing the last line, have the class repeat the child’s name and clap the syllables. Continue until each child has been chosen.

Who Are You?
(sung to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”)
Who, who, who are you?
Say it loud and clear. (child says name, claps name)
Listen, listen, listen, listen,
Whose name do you hear? (children repeat name, clap name)

Adaptation: If very young children have trouble clapping syllables, hold their hands and clap with them, counting as you do.
