ELA Focus Skills: Active Viewing, Phonological Awareness (Beginning Sounds), Vocabulary

Hold up a picture of a van, point to the word, and have children say the word with you: Van. Say, The word van begins with the /v/ sound. Repeat the word, emphasizing the beginning /v/ sound. Tell children they are going to watch a video, and have them listen for more words that begin with the /v/ sound.

Play the Between the Lions video “Words Beginning with ‘v’” for children. Talk about the /v/ words. Say the following words/phrases and have children repeat them: violin, vest, vacuum cleaner, vase, volcano, and video games. Ask, Did you hear the /v/ sound at the beginning of each word/phrase?

Play the video again and have children repeat the words with the children on the video. Then invite children to name other words that begin with /v/.

Educator Tip: Guided and independent Letter, Sound, and Word practice continues to take place in center activities. It is helpful to set up the literacy center immediately after the direct instruction and repeat instruction before children work in the literacy center identifying letters.

Adaptation: If children have difficulty thinking of other words that start with /v/, allow them to look at ABC books for ideas.
