Tell children they are going to march in the letter “Yy” parade.

  • With masking tape or chalk, make a large uppercase and lowercase “Yy” side by side on the floor.
  • Have children line up and, one by one, take big steps as they march along the uppercase letter “Y.”
  • Then have them move over and take tiny steps along the lowercase letter “y.”
  • As they march, have children make a "Y" shape with their arms and chant the letter name.

Educator Tip: Guided and independent letter, sound, and word practice continues to take place in center activities. It is helpful to set up the literacy center immediately after the direct instruction and repeat instruction before children work in the literacy center identifying letters.
