Before You Read
Tell children that you will read the book Chicks and Salsa again. Show the book cover. Have children read the title with you and locate the names of the author and illustrator. Set a focus for children by having them name any root or leaf vegetables they recognize as you read.

As You Read

  • Let children choose favorite pages and describe what is happening in the illustration.
  • Encourage children to identify any root or leaf plants they see in the book.  

After You Read
Have children describe a scene that includes the plants that they like best.

Take It Further: Talk about the difference between a farm and a garden with children. Say, The author tells about different plants that grow on Nuthatcher’s farm. How is a farm different from a garden?
