Encourage children to select a book that interests them and to look at the words and pictures on their own or with other children. Ask children to show you the front cover and point to the title of the book. Read aloud the title.
Then ask children to tell you about the book they have selected. Let children turn the pages, prompting them as needed. Ask them to describe the food featured in the book. Ask, What colors do you see? What shapes?
Acknowledge children for turning the pages gently and handling the books with care.
