Skill Focus: Active Viewing, Active Listening, Phonological Awareness (Beginning and Ending Sounds)

Explain to children that they are going to watch a video that has lots of words with the letter sound /f/. Tell children the name of the video is Between the Lions "Cliff Hanger and the Fabulous Flying Fish."

Before You Watch
Encourage children to clap when they hear a word with the letter sound /f/.

  • Say, The video is called Between the Lions Cliff Hanger and the F-F-F-Fabulous F-F-F-Flying F-F-F-Fish.

As you Watch
Have children listen for the words that have the letter /f/ sound as they watch the video.

  • Pause as you come to a word with the letter sound /f/.
  • Ask questions such as, What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word fish? (/f/) What sound do you hear at the end of cliff? (/f/)

Play the video again.

  • Pause when the Cliff Hanger says a word that has the letter sound /f/.
  • Repeat the word while stretching the letter sound /f/. Have children repeat the word with the stretched /f/. (For example, f-f-f-f-abulous.)

After You Watch
Review many of the /f/ words in the video. Have children repeat them after you.

  • Encourage children to include /f/ words they know.
  • Create a new "Fabulous Fly Adventure" story with children using the new words that begin with the letter sound /f/.
