ELA Focus Skills: Phonological Awareness (Segmenting); Name Recognition

Tell children you are going to sing the song “Hello, Hello, Everyone” again. Hold up the suitcase and tell children their name cards are in the suitcase.

  • Say, I will open the suitcase and pull out a name and sing to the child whose name is on the card. If it is your name, after I sing, I want you to stand up and say your name and then say the name of a favorite fruit or vegetable. Prompt children to look at and point to the pictures of a fruit and vegetable if they have trouble naming one.
  • Then say, Then we will all clap the parts of the name of the fruit or vegetable. Demonstrate by pulling a card with your name. Stand up and say, Mrs. Sanders. I like broccoli. Let’s clap how many parts are in the word broc-co-li.
  • Have children say how many parts. (three) Pull a name and repeat until all children have had a turn.

Hello, Hello, Everyone
(sing to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”)
Hello, hello, everyone,
Let’s clap our names
And have some fun.
Say your name
And clap along.
It will sound just like a song.
Hello, hello, everyone,
Let’s clap our names
And have some fun.

Teacher Tip: If any children do not recognize their name in print, you may need to give clues or identify the child after you pull the name card. For example, say, Whose name begins with the /s/ sound and rhymes with “carry?” or Sari, you’re next!
