Remind children of what the little girl said in The Ugly Vegetables: “magical aroma filled the air,” and neighbors “took deep breaths of air, like they were trying to eat the smell.” Then remind children that the pigs in Chicks and Salsa were “overwhelmed by enticing aromas.” Ask children if there are any foods that have an aroma, or smell, that they love.

Then tell children you are going to teach them a song about aromas. Say, Each time we sing the song, I want one child to fill in the last line with some food that you love the aroma, or smell, of. Go around the circle and if a child cannot think of a food smell that they love, then ask them to name a food from one of the stories you read this week.

Sing through once and then have children join in.

What aroma do I smell?
Do I smell? Do I smell?
What aroma do I smell?
