Join children to work in small groups. Introduce the PEEP and the Big Wide World game “Hide and Peep.” Before having children play, remind them that one of the things a scientist does is listen and observe very carefully. Say, This game is about listening and observing. Explain that Peep, Chirp, and Quack like to hide under flowerpots and other places in the garden shed. Ask children to name any items they know in the garden shed.
Explain how to play the game. Tell children they will get to see where the characters hide. Say, But then they will scrunch down in their hiding spots so you can’t see them any more. You have to try to remember where Peep, Chirp, and Quack are hiding. Explain that the narrator will call out one of their names. Say, When the narrator calls out their names, you have to remember where they are hiding and help find them! Tell children to watch closely because they may be hiding in something or behind something.
Then model how to play the game. As you model, ask, Did you see where Peep went? Close your eyes and think about where you saw him. When the narrator asks where Peep is, click on that object.
- If a player finds Peep, Chirp, and Quack, the garden shed lights go out and the characters hide in different places again. The difficulty increases only if a round is successfully completed without mistakes.
- If a player finds the first three characters without error, the next level has those three characters hiding, plus one new character.
- Levels get tougher until eight characters are hidden, which requires a lot of observation and recall.
- Be aware that younger players may not progress beyond the early levels.
Let children work in small groups to play the game. Give help as needed or pair a young child with an older child who can help.
Adaptation: Younger children may not be able to do the game alone, so play with them one-on-one or assign them a partner with stronger fine motor and memory skills.
