Read The Ugly Vegetables by Grace Lin aloud to individuals or small groups.

Invite children to point out the houses in the neighborhood that have colorful flower gardens.

  • Point to the vegetable garden and ask, Why does the little girl think her garden is ugly?
  • Pause on pages that spark children's attention and talk about the words and illustrations.
  • Ask questions to help children make connections, such as, Have you ever planted a garden? What kind of plants would you plant in your garden? Why?

After reading, discuss the story by asking questions, such as, Do you think the little girl still thinks her plants are ugly? Why do you think that?
