ELA Focus Skills: Letter Recognition, Fine Motor Skills

Educator Prep: Write the word water on a sheet of paper. Place a star at the spot where you begin writing the letter “W.” Make a copy for each child to trace.

Help children practice writing the letter “Ww” in the context of the word water.

  • Give each child a copy of the word water. Read the word aloud. Have children repeat.
  • Model how to trace the “W” with your finger. Say, Put your finger on the star. Then pull your finger down toward you. Push it up the next straight line. Pull it down again. And finally push it up the last straight line. Stop at the end of the line. Have children trace the letter a few times.
  • Then, if children are ready, guide them to trace all the letters with crayons or markers.

Adaptation: Help younger children trace the letters. Hold their hands lightly so they have control of the crayon or pencil, and just guide them in the right direction.
