ELA Focus Skills: Listening and Speaking, Counting, Fine Motor Skills, Vocabulary

Tell children that you are going to recite a poem about ten little water drops. Ask children to try to visualize the water drops. Recite the first verse and model the gestures. Invite children to do the gestures on the other verses and chime in when they can. Then encourage children to use their imagination and make up some new gestures to show how the water drops moved.

Ten Little Water Drops
Ten little water drops flow in a line,                         (hold up 10 fingers)
One rolls away, and then there were nine.              (show rolling motion)

Nine little water drops land on the gate,                  (hold up 9 fingers)
One drops off, and then there were eight.               (drop one finger)

Eight little water drops drop down from heaven,    (hold up 8 fingers)
One splashes off, and then there were seven.          (hit palm of hand and say SPLASH)

Seven little water drops rest on some sticks,          (hold up 7 fingers)
One slips off, and then there were six.                     (show slipping motion)

Six little water drops run down the drive,               (hold up 6 fingers)
One races off, and then there were five.                  (race fingers across a palm)

Five little water drops tap on my door,                    (hold up 5 fingers)
One glides off, and then there were four.                (glide fingers across a palm)

Four little water drops hang from a tree,                 (hold up 4 fingers)
One tumbles off, and then there were three.           (show falling motion)

Three little water drops hit on my shoe,                  (hold up 3 fingers)
One is absorbed, and then there were two.            (make a sucking sound)

Two little water drops drip just for fun,                   (hold up 2 fingers)
One goes SPLAT, and then there was one.              (hit palm of hand and say SPLAT)

One little raindrop sleeps in the sun,                       (hold up 1 finger)
A cat licks it up, and then there were none!             (say MEOW)
