Build children’s vocabulary to discuss their observations of moving water during their explorations by having them play “Over, Under, Around, and Through.”

Take children to an open area. Ask them to recall how water moved in the video “River Story.” Say, As the river moved, it flowed through moss, over pebbles, around rocks, and under a bridge.

Have each child stand next to a partner. Hold up the hoop and recite the first two lines of the chant. Use the following procedure as you chant the next lines:

  • Lay the hoop on the ground, signal a pair, and chant, <child’s name> and <child’s name>, Go over it.
  • Hold the hoop high in the air, signal another pair, and chant, <child’s name> and <child’s name>, Go under it.
  • Lay the hoop on the ground again, signal a third pair, and chant, <child’s name> and <child’s name>, Go around it.
  • Stand the hoop up in front of you, signal another pair, and chant, <child’s name> and <child’s name>, Go through it.

Chant the last two lines. Repeat until all children have had a chance to go over, under, around, or through the hoop.
