ELA Focus Skills: Listening and Speaking, Vocabulary

Tell children that together they will write a poem about water. Use the template below.

Water
We see water all around.
Water in rivers,
Water in streams,
Water for washing,
Water for swimming.
Water here, water there,
We see water everywhere!

Write each line on a sentence strip. Place the strips in a sentence chart. Read the lines, pointing to each word as you do. Say,

  • Point to the second and third lines and say, The words at the end of these two lines name places we see water.
  • Point to the fourth and fifth lines and say, The words at the end of these two lines tell ways we use water. Let’s change the last words in these sentences to make a new poem about water.
  • Read the beginning of line two and then pause. Say, Where else do you see water?
  • Write the words on a sentence strip, cut it to fit, and then place it over the words in rivers in the sentence chart.
  • Read the new line with children.
  • Continue to write and replace words.
  • Read the completed poem aloud together.
  • Encourage children to suggest other words and make new poems.
