Encourage children to select books that interest them and to look at the words and pictures on their own or with others. Ask each child to show you the front cover and point to the title of the book. Read aloud the title.

Then ask the child to tell you what the book is about and turn the pages to show his or her favorite part. Acknowledge each child for turning pages and handling books with care.

Read several pages in the book aloud and talk about them with children. For example, ask, What do you see on this page? Why do you like this book? Have you seen or read other books like it? Which do you like best?
