  • crayons or pencils
  • dot-to-dot copies of the uppercase and lowercase letter “Rr” (one per child)

MA Standards:

Foundational Skills/RF.PK.MA.1.d: Recognize and name some uppercase letters of the alphabet and the lowercase letters in one’s own name.

Head Start Outcomes:

Literacy Knowledge/Alphabet Knowledge: Recognizes that the letters of the alphabet are a special category of visual graphics that can be individually named.
Literacy Knowledge/Early Writing: Copies, traces, or independently writes letters or words.

PreK Learning Guidelines:

English Language Arts/Reading and Literature 7: Develop familiarity with the forms of alphabet letters, awareness of print, and letter forms.

ELA Focus Skills: Fine Motor Skills, Letter Recognition

Educator Prep: Make dot-to-dot copies of the uppercase and lowercase letter “Rr” (one for each child).

Help children practice writing the letter “Rr.”

  • Give each child a copy of the dot-to-dot uppercase and lowercase letter “Rr.”
  • Model how to trace the letters with your fingers, the way you would write each letter.
  • Have children trace the letters on their papers.
  • Distribute crayons or pencils.
  • Let children trace the dots to write the letters “Rr.”

Adaptation: If young children have trouble tracing the letters, hold their hands loosely, so that they still have control, and trace the lines with them.
