ELA Focus Skills: Phonological Awareness (Beginning Sounds), Sorting and Classifying

Say, I’m thinking of words that start with the /d/ sound. I will give you hints. See if you can guess my word. Then say,

  • I’m thinking of an animal that begins with the /d/ sound. It likes to swim and says, “Quack!” What is it? Yes, duck begins with the /d/ sound and a duck swims and says “Quack!”
  • I’m thinking of a place that is hot and has a lot of sand. Camels and cactus live there. It begins with the /d/ sound. What is it? (desert)
  • I’m thinking of a word that begins with the /d/ sound and means the opposite of up. What is it? (down)
  • I’m thinking of a toy that begins with the /d/ sound. It looks like a real baby and you can play with it in the Pretend Center. What is it? (doll)
  • I’m thinking of a coin, a kind of money. It’s not a penny or a nickel. It is worth 10 cents and begins with the /d/ sound. What is it? (dime)
  • I’m thinking of a word that begins with the /d/ sound and means the opposite of light. What is it? (dark)

Invite children to think of clues for more /d/ words for the group to guess.
