Have children clap words in a sentence. On small word strips, write the words to the sentence “A speedboat raced by.” Insert the strips in a sentence chart. Then say,

  • Listen to this sentence from the book we read today. Track the words as you read the sentence.
  • Ask, How many words are in the sentence? Listen, and as I read the sentence, I’ll clap each word. Say each word slowly and clap.
  • Ask, How many claps did I make? Four claps. There are four words in the sentence. Have children say the sentence and clap along with you.
  • Write a number, in order, under each word: 1-2-3-4. Say each number as you write it, then go back to the beginning and count with children.
  • Remove the word strips with the numbers. Insert a duplicate set of the word cards in order in the sentence chart, but leave one word out. Read the words aloud. Say, This sentence is not complete. A word is missing. Who can tell me what word is missing?
  • Ask a volunteer to get that word card from the original and put it in place to complete this sentence.
