ELA Focus Skills: Listening and Speaking, Phonological Awareness

Give children an opportunity to make a group decision. Remind children that each day they sang “The More We Get Together” in a different way. Point to the days of the week on the calendar as you say,

  • On Monday, I said your name and shook your hand.
  • On Tuesday, I held up your name card.
  • On Wednesday, I said your name and then you chose a friend to say his or her name.
  • On Thursday, I held up name cards and you said and clapped the word parts in your name.
  • Today, Friday, you will decide which way to sing the song!

Clarify that children may repeat a way they have sung the greeting or choose a new way. Allow time for discussion and a consensus of opinion. Then let children sing the greeting song their way.

The More We Get Together
(sung to the tune of “Have You Ever Seen a Lassie?”)
The more we get together,
Together, together.
The more we get together,
The happier we’ll be.
For your friends are my friends,
And my friends are your friends.
The more we get together,
The happier we’ll be.

There’s <child’s name> and <child’s name>,
and <child’s name> and <child’s name>.
There’s <child’s name> and <child’s name>,
and <child’s name> and <child’s name>.
The more we get together,
The happier we’ll be.

Social Emotional Tip: Making a group decision lets children develop a sense of inclusion and importance to the group.
