One-on-One Reading: Who Sank the Boat?

Read aloud Who Sank the Boat by Pamela Allen to individuals or small groups. Read the story once without pausing.
Then reread the story and as you read,
- Talk about what happens when all the big, heavy animals get into the small boat as floats on the water.
- Encourage children to read any words they know.
- Pause on the page where the mouse is jumping into the boat. Have childen predict what will happen next. After reading the page say, I wonder why the smallest animal made the boat sink? Talk about how the boat could continue to float on the water when even a little bit of weight was added to it.
- Then, invite children to use the illustrations to help them read the story you.
