ELA Focus Skills: Name Recognition, Phonological Awareness (Rhythm, Rhyme, and Repetition; Segmenting)

Have children sit in a circle. Tell children that you are going to sing “If Your Name Has One Word Part” again. Say, This time when you stand, clap your name parts when you say your name.

  • Sing “If Your Name Has One Word Part.” At the end, signal children whose names have one word part to stand and, one-by-one, say and hop the number of parts in their names.
  • If someone stands whose name has more than one part, say, You have three word parts in your name, Christopher. We will sing about people with three word parts in a moment.
  • Continue with the other verses until all children have been recognized.
  • Encourage the whole group to sing along.
  • You may want to substitute the word “syllable” for “word part” to help children grasp the meaning of the word “syllable.”

Stand up and say (clap, hop, sing) it now.

Add verses for 2, 3, 4, and 5 word parts as needed.
