Select a book about color from the browsing box to demonstrate book handling to children before they explore the books on their own.
- Draw attention to the front and back covers. Open the book and turn pages one at a time.
- Discuss what children see on the covers, prompting them to name the title, author, and illustrator.
- Have them share what they think the book will be about by just looking at the covers.
Then have children choose a book individually or in pairs and direct them to "read" the words and pictures.
- Encourage them to use the color vocabulary they have learned to identify and describe the different colors in the book.
- As children explore the books, observe how they handle and care for books.
