Skill Focus: Fine Motor Skills, Letter Recognition
Educator Prep: Print out the Between the Lions alphabet chart or create an alphabet chart on chart paper.
Have children press uppercase and lowercase “Pp” molds into the sand. As they work, talk with children about the features of each letter and encourage them to describe each letter using vocabulary such as curved and straight.
Encourage them to use their fingers to draw the letter in the sand. Say,
- I see you drew a lowercase “p.” Can you point to the lowercase letter “p” on our alphabet chart?
Adaptation: If you do not have a sensory table, you can adapt the Letter Molds activity by using a cake pan or baking dish to hold the sand (or salt).
