Read aloud Ten Dirty Pigs/Ten Clean Pigs by Carol Roth to individuals or small groups.
- As you read, ask volunteers (or help children) to point to the pigs.
- As a volunteer points to the pigs, count aloud together.
When you finish reading the first part of the book, ask a child to watch very closely. Then turn the book upside down and around!
- Explain that there is a different story on the pages about the pigs.
- Ask children to describe what is different about the two covers.
- Then open the book and to begin the second story.
- Count aloud the number of pigs with children as you finish each page.
- Explain the meaning of unfamiliar words such as grime, grit, pose, primp, and slime.
